New Music Friday #31

It’s gonna be a bit of a rush job New Music Friday to be totally transparent with you, gang. Usually I wake up about half an hour before my alarm to get this out in time before I have to get ready for work but this morning I completely didn’t realise it was Friday and not only slept until my alarm but snoozed it too! So I’m like, an hour down on the time I usually have and I could finish it off at work during lunch I guess but I feel like less people read it when it’s late… Anyways, follow along HERE and as always, have a blessed day.

AJ TRACEY – ‘BLACKED OUT’ ☑️
I never know how to get my pop head friends into grime and UK rap, like there’s some reticence to really enjoy the music… they’re very happy for Skepta to win the Mercury, of course, but they’re not ever gonna listen to Konnichiwa on the commute? Anyway, if you’re looking for an accessible way in I need to let you know that this song quietly bangs and also AJ Tracey is so fit it’s basically self-harm for you to not give him a try.

BEBE REXHA – ‘THAT’S IT’ ft. GUCCI MANE & 2 CHAINZ
Sadly not a curtain closer on this chick’s inexplicable career. Last week someone asked why Bebe Rexha keeps being given so many chances to happen, when she’s not going to happen. White and blonde will always be the fetch of the music industry, is the answer. This song is two shat out Gucci and Chainz verses linked together with the vocal blackface of Bebe slurring “dassit dassit” into the mic in a way I assume is meant to be sexy. It’s not. Can we call time on this, please.

CAMILA CABELLO – ‘HAVANA’ ft. YOUNG THUG
Please don’t let the fact that Zayn Malik has a lot less Twitter followers than the rest of the 1D boys because racist abuse, including comments from this “ratchetandsassy” little rat, led him to stop using his account, stop you from loading this up at the top of the NMF playlist and “ironically” stanning. Believe me, I’m taking note.

CASSIE – ‘LOVE A LOSER’ ft. G-EAZY ☑️
Cassie’s back! And honestly anyone who has ever found themselves making excuses for a trash boy needs to adopt this “rather lose a lover than love a loser” mantra. G-Eazy is here to ruin everything, of course, and I have some thoughts and strong feelings on the male rap feature on every pop girl single for the past two years, but that’s for another time. This isn’t top shelf Cassie, but I liked it nonetheless.

GRACE MITCHELL – ‘CAPITAL LETTERS’ ☑️
Grace Mitchell’s trajectory as an artist is a bit of a mystery to me and I don’t have time to do any research this morning to find out what happened between ‘Jitter’ in 2015 and now. Anyway, she’s up on the NMF playlist sounding much more rock ‘n’ roll than she did on the Raceday EP, but I’m into it? I feel like I say this about any song I hear that has a guitar riff, but like… imagine if Harry Styles had a song like this.

HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – ‘CALIFORNIA DREAMING’
Oh my god, I cannot for the life of me remember what sparked me to just yesterday revist an old memory of Hollywood Undead, but how weird that they are releasing a song today! That’s pretty much the only reason I’m covering them here – they’re vile in that edgelord MySpace way I thought was cool when I was fifteen because I was too stupid and provincial to know better. Remember their Jeffree Star collaboration? If she doesn’t, she’s too young for you bro… Anyway this song isn’t actually terrible, but it’s not good either.

KELE OKEREKE – ‘GROUNDS FOR RESENTMENT’ ft. OLLY ALEXANDER
Years & Years will play Brighton Pride this weekend (see you there, gays!) and I assume they will have a new song or two in the setlist. This is a nice little top up, keep the profile going appearance from Olly Alexander. I mean… it’s a little bit twee and Mika, but both Kele and Olly’s voices are soft and sweet and it’s so cute I can’t hate it. I love that proper gay love songs and duets are becoming a thing this year, and this one is anchored by a black queer dude. Amazing.

NEON TREES – ‘FEEL GOOD’ ☑️
And speaking of queer artists – Neon Trees are one of my fave bands that no one else I know seems to care about. I know you’re probably put off by the fact that it’s a male vocal and they have instruments but! The lead singer is an ex-Mormon who struggled with his sexuality because of his faith and their last album deals with his mental health and relationships. I think y’all would like them if you listened, basically. Their new single is high energy and a little bit flirty, get into it.

PHOEBE RYAN – ‘FORGETTING ALL ABOUT YOU’ ft. BLACKBEAR ☑️
Another fun little bop from Phoebe Ryan, this one, with it’s breathy girlish vocal and sugary beat is very in the vein of a slightly stripped back Carly Rae Jepsen. Sadly this song is also ruined by an unnecessary rap feature but the Phoebe parts, about getting over an ex, are catchy af.

RAE SREMMURD – ‘PERPLEXING PEGASUS’ ☑️
I wasn’t expecting any new Rae Sremmurd for a long while, so this new Mike-WiLL cut is a very pleasant surprise! Very much in the same vein as anything from Sremmlife 2, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was just an out take from those sessions.

WRETCH 32 – ‘WHISTLE’ ft KOJO FUNDS & DONAE’O ☑️
Once again, friends, this song just lowkey pops off in a very understated way. It’s rolling on 8.15am and I can’t be more descriptive than that unfortunately, just get it in your ears and listen for yourself!
