New Music Friday 2017 #6

If you started following me on any form of social media any time past Q4 2013, you probably don’t know about me and Katy Perry. Like, everyone associates me with Britney, which is right and correct and she is my #1 ride or die forever and always always and forever IDST but… like I’m also a massive Katy Perry stan. I know. Don’t @ me. Anyways, it’s hard for me to review anything properly this week because all I can think about is how chained I am to ‘Chained To The Rhythm’. Sorry. Normal service will resume next week, probably.

anne-marie ciao adios
ANNE-MARIE – ‘CIAO ADIOS’ ☑️
I’d really like Anne-Marie to happen but I don’t think she’s going to happen. If you put your rose-tinted glasses on tho, this is a bop regardless.

avelino stormzy skepta energy
AVELINO – ‘ENERGY’ ft. STORMZY & SKEPTA ☑️
Yes, yes, 1000x yes to this song. The beat has me stumbling round like a wasted zombie.

carly rae jepsen lil yachty it takes two
CARLY RAE JEPSEN & LIL YACHTY – ‘IT TAKES TWO’
This Mike WiLL Made-It remake of the classic Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock track is kinda pointless. Like, are we tone deaf? Why would you ever listen to this instead of the original?

katy perry skip marley chained to the rhythm
KATY PERRY – ‘CHAINED TO THE RHYTHM’ ft. SKIP MARLEY ☑️
TURN IT UP, IT’S MY FAVOURITE SONG! God, I am just so glad to have Katy Perry back so we can forget that ‘Rise’ ever happened. Since 2013’s Prism, Katy has gone on a journey of consciousness, resulting in this woke-pop anthem that doesn’t interrogate or challenge in the manner that a Beyoncé or a Gaga track would, but instead gently shakes awake those with their eyes closed and leads them right into the path of a frankly brilliant Skip Marley feature that threatens “the empire” and promises riots. By virtue of Skip’s verse, ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ becomes probably the most overtly aggressive mainstream Top 40 track from one of the pop queens, though Katy’s part is pastel-coloured marshmallow business as usual. This song lilts and grooves and sounds a little bit like ‘Why’ by Carly Simon and a lot like Katy Perry’s next worldwide #1. WELCOME BACK, QUEEN.

sigrid don't kill my vibe
SIGRID – ‘DON’T KILL MY VIBE’ ☑️
I would dance, dance, dance to this distortion.

superfood double dutch
SUPERFOOD – ‘DOUBLE DUTCH’ ☑️
Superfood released an album a couple years ago that I lowkey love but this new single is their first track I can envision breaking down walls to connect and inspire new fans. It gives me Stereo MCs vibes. I’m into it.

texas let's work it out
TEXAS – ‘LET’S WORK IT OUT’
This month marks the 20 year anniversary of the White On Blonde album and honestly, doesn’t that make you feel sick? I just refuse to accept I’m aging. This is the lead single from Texas’ upcoming record and it’s kinda mellow, and comfortable… like living in a bubble. Sadly, not worth more than one listen though.

tove lo lies in the dark
TOVE LO – ‘LIES IN THE DARK’ ☑️
I wonder if Tove Lo is lonely up there in that upper echelon songwriter utopia? Another 10/10 dark-pop track from one of the best dark-pop stars. Bonus: this piece from The Fader about the 50 Shades Darker OST is a must read.

zak abel wretch 32 rock bottom
ZAK ABEL – ‘ROCK BOTTOM’ ft. WRETCH 32
Zak Abel has such a gorgeous voice and we keep sweeping it under the mat. I don’t rate this song too much, but it does give me an excuse to send y’all to Spotify to hear his other material. Check out ‘Unstable’.
