Let’s see how long I keep up this promise to deliver five songs old and new at 5pm every single day to keep this blog lubed and operational…
1. ARIANA GRANDE – ‘BEST MISTAKE’ ft. BIG SEAN
A soft piano and percussive ballad, with a nicely restrained and audibly enunciated vocal performance from Ariana. Pint-sized guest rapper Big Sean delivers a mid-level verse which includes a creepy line about being obsessed with Ariana’s mother. This is my favourite track to come out of the My Everything campaign so far, and leans further towards where I would prefer Ariana to be as an artist. That said, it would be nice if she could do a track without a feature once in a while. ★★★★☆
2. KATY PERRY – ‘THIS IS HOW WE DO’ BRILLZ REMIX
This is an interesting Step Up franchise friendly rework that sounds like a dance break all the way through. Retaining minimal elements from the original mix, it manages to sound like the dubstep wobble that was “on trend” throughout 2010/11 fucked some 90s acid house and made this weird, vocal sampling baby. ★★★☆☆
3. RIHANNA – ‘ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD’
I am nostalgic for Rihanna at the moment so I stuck this on my commute playlist before I left for work this morning. I don’t need to go in-depth about the shoulder shrugging beat, the arms-aloft chorus or those punctuating “uh!” sounds on the verses, there’s no way you’re unfamiliar with this track. Not my fave Rihanna song by any stretch of the imagination, but it was the Rihanna song I needed for today. ★★★★☆
4. ACE WILDER – ‘BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN’
This song has basically been my anthem for the past few months. It’s got that EDM-country vibe, and slots in nicely in playlists between G.R.L. – ‘Ugly Heart’ and Britney Spears – ‘Now That I Found You’. The hook makes you punch the air in solidarity with the message – “don’t wanna work, work work, I wanna make money while I sleep”… is that not the The Dream? Catch Ace Wilder performing this track and more, live at Deluxe Edition in a couple weeks.
5. YEARS & YEARS – ‘BREATHE’
The singer from Years & Years has such a gorgeous voice and this reworking of the Blu Cantrell x Sean Paul smash from the early Noughties is so fucking incredible that if you haven’t heard it before right now, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your life. It completely flips the original and makes it a smoother, more “vibey” mix but loses none of the fun and excitement by trying to be acoustic, melancholy, “real” or over-cool. It’s just a 100% fantastic cover version.
